About Phil
Essays on sociology, memetics, theology, and the ideas that shape society.

I'm Phil Linley. I'm a software engineer, reader, and lifelong student of the ideas that shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us.
I'm particularly interested in the intersections of sociology, memetics, philosophy, and theology. How do ideas spread and take hold? How do our beliefs about human nature influence the societies we build? Why do certain cultural assumptions become so deeply embedded that we stop questioning them?
These are the kinds of questions that keep me reading, researching, and writing.
My interests are informed by a background in sociology and a Christian worldview rooted in the Reformed theological tradition. I find myself especially drawn to questions surrounding human nature, social inequality, cultural evolution, and the relationship between what we observe in the world and what we ought to consider good or just.
I'm interested in the ways ideas become institutions, how institutions shape our understanding of what is normal, and how the stories societies tell about human nature can be used to justify the systems they create. I'm equally interested in how theology challenges those assumptions, particularly through the Christian understanding of the imago Dei: that every person possesses inherent dignity and worth.
This isn't an academic journal, and I'm not writing as someone with all the answers. It's a place to work through questions, explore unfamiliar ideas, connect seemingly disparate disciplines, and occasionally challenge a few assumptions along the way.
Some writing will be more researched and argumentative. Other pieces will be reflections on something I've read, a connection I've made, or a question I haven't quite figured out yet.
Ultimately, I write because I think ideas matter. They shape how we see one another, how we organize our communities, and what kind of world we believe is possible.
I hope you'll find something here worth thinking about.
